10 Surprising #NationalWineAndCheeseDay Facts

July 25th is #NationalWineAndCheeseDay where participants around the US celebrate, well, you guessed it: Wine and Cheese! But let's be real, a lot of us celebrate as if the national event occurs daily because nothing quite tees up a nice meal or takes down a rough afternoon like wine and cheese. If you're hoping to officially participate this year simply take a picture of your favorite pairing and post it to your social channels with the accompanying hashtag.

Posting details aside, there are a lot of very interesting facts about wine and cheese that you may not know. See if any of our 10 finds surprise you!

1) There are 2,000+ variations of common cheese in the world.

2) "Oenophobia" is the fear of wine. Who knew there was such a thing?!

3) Cheese dates back some 4,000 years and as the story goes, it was discovered by accident. That makes cheese older than many written languages.

4) Contrary to countless cartoons, mice aren't really fans of cheese.

5) Wine is typically stored on its side. Any idea why? Well, if the bottle were vertical and the cork was to dry out and fall in, your favorite glass of momma's grape juice would taste a little wonky.

6) Ever notice that some cheeses are capitalized and others are not? The capitalization reflects the name of the city where the cheese came to fame.

7) Wine is loaded with antioxidants. Far more than other juices. And while this added health benefit is definitely a draw for many people, years of drinking or a few long nights can do a number on your body beyond a classic hangover. Help restore your body's natural ability to break down alcohol and filter other toxins with support from Liver Fend.

8) Here in America, the most popular cheese recipe is far and away Macaroni and Cheese. Okay, not THAT surprising, but it's pretty impressive that it's remained a house favorite all these years.

9) From Hippocrates to Benjamin Franklin, many famous leaders and aspiring practitioners believed in the medicinal value of wine through the ages.

10) While it's not entirely caught on in the States, many countries enjoy red wine and Coca-Cola for a fun and sweet spin on the traditional flavor. Just be careful, tannins and extra sugar are a guaranteed headache for some.

We hope you enjoy the "holiday" responsibly this year and share your experience with friends. Whether it's a night on the town, a date night at home or a progressive party in the neighborhood, bring out the wine and cheese and have a wonderful time!

Cheers!
