Budget Your Health Like a Boss

  • 2 min read

Reactive healthcare can cost a small fortune. We don't need to convince anyone of that reality. Unplanned, unattended and underestimated health complications have no mercy on personal bank accounts.

That's why we want to talk through some proactive and responsible measures you can make - literally today - to shift your life into a path of wellness and less financial strain.

Here's how to budget like a boss when it comes to your health.

1) Talk to your HR Department

In today's workforce, many employers and benefit plans are committed to empowering their employees. Ask your HR lead if your company reimburses gym memberships, workout equipment and/or physical rehabilitation. You might be wonderfully surprised that the resources are right there under your nose!

2) Brick in and brick out
If you're dedicated to living a healthier life, you'll undoubtedly have to cut out some unhealthy purchases. From beer to fast food to ice cream, tally up the cost and kick the bad purchase to the curb. Flip that expense into supplement, membership or equipment money and enjoy your new direction.

3) Stream the session
Here's a little secret none of the gyms want you to know. If you have the internet and a little patience, chances are you can find a class or workout routine on YouTube that'll teach you everything you need to know to get in shape from the comfort of your own home. Be it yoga, pilates, barre, CrossFit or whatever your fancy, do some searching and stream the session.

IT'S FREE!

4) Try an HSA account
During open enrollment, consider the pros and cons of a Health Savings Account. Essentially, you can load up a "debit card" of sorts for medical expenses so you don't have to dip into personal savings for that surprise hospital visit.

5) Stretch and recover
Never underestimate the value of flexibility. Maintaining limber joints and good posture can be the difference between a weekend warrior that competes for years and the guy whose knee flares up one week into his New Years workout resolution. Your body demands recovery time and proactive, conscience support of this truth can keep you out of a PT office.

6) Automate your monthly healthcare purchases
Many brands and their products are now available on a subscription basis. The beauty is two-fold. First, subscriptions typically come at a discounted per unit price and second, it takes the guesswork out of making sure you ordered your favorite multivitamin, cleanse or protein powder.

Don't wait for an injury or illness to sneak up on you. Each of the six suggestions above is easy and efficient. When you take control of your health and implement these budget-friendly solutions, you decrease the chances of being caught off guard. Because let's face it, hospital bills and specialist fees are a few tabs you don't want to pick up.
